I am alone. Techhniques weave their way through the culture of fishing. Dry fly or streamer. Deep dredging or surface action. They are the bedrock aapon which personalities are laid. Ft tying too. There are preferences throughout flyfishing that premeate the action of all. This implys an individuality within flyfishjing that helps to define not ony thre fishing but the fishermne as well It makes them, so to speak, creates an identity or an image that gives one he chance to become who their nature chooses to decide.
Dry fly fishermen are seen as a fickle lot. Selective and indepedent, they beleive the only way is on the surface. The take of a fish inspires their stodgyness and its beauty is touted as the what and the why. THere is little a drydly fisherman won't do but he is restricted to the surfaceand to himm that is good. Emergers, spiners classics and thorax ties. These are justa few of the meneageries of types that the dry fly angler loves. It's not so much that he is vain or uppitty, it's that despite other options he goes with what appeals to him the most. He is set in is way and while comfortable, only asopenminded as to switch from a parachute to a hackle stcker. BUt he ara iiiiiiii anlers dnhb g daial had o bspohe wn onstht o.
oem love dries bu ar e willing to dredge a nymph. They don't see dry fly fishing as the way only a way and some would even say they prefer the dry ly to the nym,ph utwhen the goin gets tug, well you know. The water defines their way rather then them rying to shoehorn the water into a specoific box. They canth fish and may evn catch ore fish than the devout dry fly guy yetthey do noy bear the disinctiono b well disincty dr fly guys. Some are willing to throw a san juan worm, almost considered sadism in some circles and are closer to the bait fishierman than the dry fly guy will ever be. This somehow lowers status but ups the fish count so it kinda eens out in the end.
Then there is the freshness on the scene; the streamer guys. Streamers have been around a long time. From Carrie Stevens to Don Gapen, andglers have been cast streamers for trout for asnearly as long as they have been casting. Yet lately there has been as rennesance. With spines and tandem hooks streamer fishing has been take to a whole new hardocre level. Some fish streames exclusively specifically for that big bite, the big fish paying for all the time that has been spent casting a line. The flies can be 7 or 8 inches long and with names like sex dungeon or stacked blonde evoke a fresh attitude to what has become a somewhat stagnant sport. Not to say that it is the future of the sport. I'm honestly not sure where its gonna go but streamers are fesh and they are here to stay.
As you can see, flyfishing is an art that can be organized. Whether dry fly or nymphy or streamer there are ways for all of us to have fun and improve which is the point after all isn't it. An angler does angle for fish, they are part of the end, but he is forever oevolving and will contnue to do so as long as there is new water to fish and new flies to cast and even in sokme cases if all you have is the same old thing.
