Fishing is an art. I've dabbled in art, everything from graffiti to poetry but fishing is the only one that ever stuck. I guess that's because I can't draw worth a damn and my sensitive side is to focused on not hurting a fish. My version of poetry would probably go something like this
Spots
Now you see em
Now you don't
Shit was that a fish
Damn set the...
Damn there goes another one
Shoot I gotta set the...
Oh...a stick
Well at least I caught something
That's my version of fisherman's haiku though I've never been good at counting. Unless it's fish but then I don't have to count. Zero isn't a number I don't think.
All jokes aside, art shows its bohemian little head every once in a while in fishing. Everything from tying to rigging to casting requires a little bit of creativity. Some days it's with hammer and anvil other days it's with duck quill and ink and the variation might depend on you more than the fish but the easiest thing is to blame the river and call it a day.
Lately I've been out on my local river when it's dark enough that you need a headlamp to tie on your fly. When it's to dark to see rises it's time to call it a night though the fish can still see you. It's amazing how spooky fish can be even in pitch black. Two casts over the fish I see rising in the light of my head lamp and, though the bugs keep coming off the rises stop.
I guess there's an art to night fishing too. Just like a painter you gotta hold your head just so, no for effect, but because that's how you see your fly in the reflection of the moon. It's also the way to tell if the fish are rising. When it gets to dark for dry flies the idea is to swith to a Woolly Bugger so you can fish by feel but the problem is you're fishing dry flies with 6x as you should be and any nighttime fish that takes your Woolly Bugger is gonna break you off and it's too dark to change leaders so you usually call it a night. That's why you gotta commit. Either dry flies or streamers.
